THE ROYAL GIBRALTAR REGIMENT

On 28th April 1999, Regimental Day and the 60th anniversary of the formation of the GDF, Her Majesty the Queen was pleased to grant the Gibraltar Regiment the Royal prefix. The abbreviation ‘RGR’ was already used by the Royal Ghurka Rifles, so we became known as the ‘RG’.

On 3rd July 1999 the Royal Gibraltar Regiment signed an Alliance with the Royal Irish Regiment at a parade on John Mackintosh Square.

The Regiment conducted public duties at Buckingham Palace, the Tower Of London & St James’ Palace from 28th February to 16th March 2001.

On 21st April 2004 the Regiment fired its second 62 Royal Gun Salute at the Tower Of London on the occasion of Her Majesty the Queen’s birthday.

Since being granted the Royal title, the Regiment has expanded its reach, with an overseas exercise to Morocco becoming an annual occurrence.  It has continued to maintain a presence in all the UK’s operations overseas, with troops serving with distinction in 21st Century conflicts such as Afghanistan and Iraq.  It is in these theatres that officers of the Regiment have been decorated with two Bronze Stars and a Military Cross.
